Identifying overspray correctly
Run a clean hand over a washed panel. Overspray feels gritty and consistent across upward-facing surfaces — hood, roof, trunk, mirror caps, and the tops of the door frames. Look at the glass too: overspray on windows is one of the clearest confirmations, since ordinary road contamination doesn't build up there the same way.
It's worth photographing the vehicle and the surrounding work site before anything is cleaned. If a contractor is responsible, that documentation matters.
How we remove it
Assessment and test area
Different overspray behaves differently — latex, lacquer, stucco, roofing tar, industrial coatings. We test a small area to determine what will lift it with the least aggression.
Full decontamination wash
Loose dirt is removed first so nothing is dragged across the paint during mechanical removal.
Clay and detailing-grade removal
Fine to medium clay with generous lubrication shears the cured particles off the clear coat. This handles the large majority of light and moderate overspray.
Targeted mechanical work
Heavier deposits may need a chemical solvent appropriate to the material, or careful nib work. Glass can take more aggressive treatment than paint and is handled separately.
Polish and protect
Removal can leave the surface slightly marred. A finishing polish restores clarity, followed by a sealant or coating.
Surfaces that need special care
- Textured black plastic trim, where overspray settles into the grain and clay can't reach
- Rubber window seals and weatherstripping, which stain rather than sit on top
- Matte and satin paint finishes, which cannot be polished conventionally
- Vinyl wraps, which need gentler chemistry than paint
- Glass, which usually cleans up well but needs the right blade technique
- Chrome and polished aluminium trim, which marks easily
Insurance and contractor claims
Overspray damage is frequently paid for by the responsible contractor or their insurer. A written assessment describing the affected panels, the type of contamination and the work required supports that conversation, and we can provide one after inspecting the vehicle.
Move quickly either way. Fresh overspray comes off far more easily than overspray that has sat through weeks of LA sun and bonded harder into the clear coat.
